Last night (October 5), Tyler the creator took home the top cultural influence award at the 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards, as well as Hip Hop Album of the Year, in recognition of his sixth studio album, Call me if you get lost.
Presented by LL Cool J for the Cultural Influence Award, the “Lumberjack” rapper chose to showcase his own inspirations in a heartfelt acceptance speech, shouting out an array of artists.
“Playboi Carti has a line (in ‘RIP’) where it says, ‘I bought my mommy’s house on that mumblin shit’, and I’m still torn when he says that,” Tyler says. “This thing that’s a hobby or a hobby, or a passion for us, a lot of people here, that shit got us out of trouble.” And it has allowed us to change the lives of our family and the lives of our friends.
“I really think I created my own path, but it was the people who made me realize that I can do it, who posed the model,” he continues, citing artists such as Kanye West, Busta Rhymes, André 3000., Pharrell Williams, Q-Tip, Hype Williams, and Missy Elliott (“that no one ever talks about”).
“Thank you very much for just opening the doors and throwing away the key. Not just by opening the doors, but by talking to young people like me.
“To everyone here,” he concludes, addressing the audience during the awards ceremony. “It’s beautiful, and everyone continues to thrive. Keep doing your shit.
Other artists who took home awards at last night’s event included Cardi B (for “WAP,” as well as the video starring Megan Thee Stallion), Lil Baby, Jay-Z, Saweetie and Little Simz. Along with Tyler’s thanks, Missy Elliott also won the Video Director of the Year award.
