Augmented reality platform partners with blockchain creator to bring NFTs to the real world

Overly, the do-it-yourself augmented reality (AR) platform, allows NFT creators and owners to interact with their digital tokens in real life as the startup announces integration. The company’s first blockchain art collaboration now sees world-renowned mural artist KIWIE using AR to reveal tagged NFTs to his actual street art.

Riga, Latvia – May 10, 2022 – Overly, the no-code AR creation platform, offers NFT creators and connoisseurs a no-commitment viewing opportunity. While most AR NFT platforms come with their own community, marketplace, and development guidelines, Overly allows owners to launch their augmented reality NFTs directly from OpenSea, the largest and most trusted NFT marketplace.

Unlike existing providers, Overly skipped the launch of a trading platform. Instead, the company is looking to continue its mission of making it easier to create augmented reality experiences. Thanks to its latest OpenSea integration, adding NFT to augmented reality projects is now a quick cut-and-paste job.

“The market has focused on creating semi-closed communities for those who want to create or enjoy augmented reality NFT content. Until now, people could create, buy and view AR NFTs through a specialized provider or not at all,” said Gatis Zvejnieks, chief technical officer (CTO) at Overly. “People who buy 2D content on OpenSea can buy a 3D object the next day. Just because an NFT wasn’t created on an augmented reality-powered platform doesn’t mean people can’t bring it to their surroundings via augmented reality,” Zvejnieks continued.

The idea of ​​offering NFT visualization came about after Overly’s collaboration with famed namesake wall artist and blockchain creator, KIWIE. What started as a special edition of blockchain artwork at the Spanish “Be Baller” festival has now inspired KIWIE to add AR functionality to its geotagged NFT drops for Rarible.

Each of the artist’s NFTs is geotagged to an actual spray painting somewhere in the world. Starting with its latest limited edition in Spain, fans who travel to view the AI-powered street art will now be able to view their digital representation in real time via the Overly app. “There’s a reason the world’s biggest brands are investing millions to create online assets for Metaverse. Digital property is becoming just as important as the physical assets we have. It only makes sense that NFT holders would want to interact with their digital purchases or show them off in real life. AR is simply the best tool to do this, and I’m excited to work with Overly to bridge the gap between my physical and digital work,” says KIWIE.

Overly customers can now add NFTs to their marker-based augmented reality experiences by copying a hyperlink to their digital assets in its 3D editor. The system then extracts the NFT metadata to view it directly from the hosting platform. Fans can also opt for the example of KIWIE and upload files manually to view NFTs sold or purchased on other platforms. Markerless NFT visualization via WebAR is currently available upon request. “People can use augmented reality to take photos with their purchases or decorate homes with digital objects. NFTs should no longer be reserved for our virtual expeditions and games or completely separate from our world,” adds Zvejnieks.

Overly currently supports NFTs in 3D file formats such as GLTF, GLB, FBX as well as 2D assets including JPG, PNG, and MP4. Going forward, Overly’s ambition is to connect the platform to several other NFT marketplaces, allowing people to interact with all their digital assets in augmented reality. The team is also expected to launch WebAR functionality in the coming months to enable markerless object viewing. “Ultimately, NFTs and Augmented Reality are both about establishing and providing a sense of ownership over digital assets. Whereas NFTs provide a smart contract that connects a digital coin to its physical counterpart, AR allows people to have a fully immersive experience with something they own,” adds Zvejnieks.
